Curriculum for Interns
During the first year of training, resident physicians have completed medical school and start their practical training in general medicine. This is known as the “intern” year.
At Maksat Medical Center, interns work under supervision to see patients, send for diagnostic testing, learn ultrasound techniques, and develop treatment plans.
This year, both our interns were able to make use of English-language medical resources such as Up-To-Date to find evidence-based information about disease processes. In addition, they were both fluent in Russian, and provided enormous help in communication.
Weekly conferences to discuss specific challenging cases and differential diagnoses were attended by interns and attending physicians. We take turns with the residents, here presenting a slide show in the conference room while others participate and enjoy lunch.

It is important for residents to learn basic procedures that will help improve patient quality of care. Family medicine is still a rare specialty here, and physicians with skill sets learned at Maksat Clinic are in high demand.

The country’s 20,000 foot mountain ranges make travel difficult if not outright dangerous. Local fellowships invite visits from our clinic team, where rooms are set up for comprehensive care, with referral as needed. Speciality care in the country is extremely limited, which is why we are recruiting specialists to come help us teach.
